ThisWeek In Kinder

3/1

It is March!  I can't believe we are already into the third month of 2020!  Tomorrow is Dr. Seuss' birthday!   We will read all day so let's wear our pajamas to school tomorrow.  If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home will you send them to school with your child?  We will return them tomorrow afternoon.  Please make sure they are marked with your child's name on them.

This week we will work with the sound that or makes.  We will continue to use a number line to solve math problems.  We didn't finish discussing the Lincoln Memorial so we will add that to this week's agenda.  The sight words we will focus on are were, little and more.  I will be testing the last set of sight words and sending home the results along with a new set to work on at home.   I am so impressed with the reading that is happening!  Keep working on it at home!!

2/23

I hope you all had a wonderfully relaxing week!  This week we will get right back into the swing of things.  It will go by fast and before we know it summer will be here!  This week we will continue our study of the Presidents.  We will study our national symbols, The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, and The White House.  We will be studying the sound that ar makes.  We will be working on the sight words who, four, made, and revisit day and way.  We will continue working on word problems which includes addition, subtraction, and missing addends.  Please make sure your child is reading for at least 10-15 minutes each night from the bag of books that comes home each night.  This will go far in helping with fluency!

2/9

What a fun weekend!!  I hope you all enjoyed the snow as much as we did!  This week we will celebrate Valentines Day on Friday.  If your child would like to give out cards to friends, please send in 25 cards.   No need to address them, just write who the card is from.  We will be passing them out on Friday.   Send them in any time on or before Friday.   If you have decorated the white bag that was sent home, please send it back in sometime this week also.   If you decided to make your own Valentine holder, please make sure it has your child’s name on it and send it into school this week.

We earned the most Due West Dollars in our team competition.  Remember we were team purple.  The entire class has earned DQ blizzards!  We will be having them after lunch on Monday.  YIPPIE!

Muffins with Mom is before school on Tuesday morning.  If you would like to have a muffin with your child the café will be open at 7:15.  Then you both are welcome to head over to the media center to check out the Book Fair.  We went to visit the Book Fair last week and the children wrote down some books that  were interesting.  The wish list came home last week as well as a flyer from the book fair.

Thursday is picture day!  We will be taking class and individual school pictures in the morning.  I like it in the morning!  We tend to look a little rougher by the end of the day – teacher included!  😊

Content this week includes studying the word family -all.  We will be discussing a handful of Presidents.  We will be working on the words there, day, and way.  We have introduced the number line and will be using it as a strategy to help us solve math problems.  We will start to discuss living vs non-living and probably argue about which category things that used to be living fall into.  It always is a very interesting discussion.  We will also be adopting a book buddy to encourage us to keep reading at home.  This book buddy will be a stuffed animal that stays with your child’s bag of books.   This post is already too long!!  Hope you read it to the end..  HAHAHAHA  Have a great week.

2/2

It continues to be busy in kindergarten.  I am seeing a lot of success in sounding out words, writing what we hear, and in Math!!!  I am very proud of all those who are working so hard!  You may be hearing some murmurs of trying to get to 100 DUE WEST Dollars.    The school is doing a school wide buy in.  They have planned fun activities for students to do but they need to earn 100 DUE WEST Dollars to participate.  A couple of them have already made it to 100 and others are so close!  Remember they earn DUE WEST dollars for following the school rules and working hard.  They have until this Wednesday to earn those $100.  Each student has a 100 chart in their “bank” so they know exactly how many more to get to 100!   We will have our class store open for those that choose to spend their dollars instead of participate in the buy in activities.  It is going to be fun!

This week we will continue studying rocks.  We will investigate dirt and design a dirt shifter to separate rocks from the soil.  We will study the suffix -ed.  We will study about dental health.  In math we are become more fluent with our math addition facts and we will start practicing subtraction facts.  Sight words we work on this week are have, from, and his.  BINGO night is Friday night.  PTA sent you some information about BINGO night.  It is always a lot of fun.

1/26

This week is all about ROCKS and SOIL!  In phonics we will study how to spell /k/ after short vowels - ck!  We will continue to work on word problems and number sense.  Sight word focus is into and some.  We will continue practicing writing our opinion and how to support what we believe.  Our field trip is Wednesday.  A mining truck will come to school and we will each have a bag of rocks to bring home.  We will be using the bag of rocks to study so they will come home next week!

1/20

We enjoyed studying Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., last week and celebrating 100 days of school!   We will continue to practice the c or k rule this week.  We will be reading and studying the similarities and differences in the Snowman books by Caralyn Buehner.  In Health, we will talk about Fire Safety.  In Math, we are working on word problems and making pictures to represent what is happening in the problem.  At this point they should be able to distinguish if the problem is addition or subtraction.   Some of us are working up to 5 and others can work up to 20.  We will continue to practice and try to get quicker at answering the problems!  We are writing our opinions and learning how to support opinions using the word “because.”  Sight words we will introduce are purple and now.  We will continue to review out, five, was, and has.  The new list of words will come home this week but I will also attached them to this email so you can start working on them.  We will test them close to the end of February.   This Saturday is Pjs and Pancakes at Longhorn.  The flyer explaining it all went home last week.   Next Wednesday – 1/29 is an in house field trip on rocks.  If you haven’t returned the permission slip, please do so ASAP.  Look for another form to come home if you have not returned it yet.

1/12/20

This week will be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We will finally learn the rule of when to use a "c" or a "k".  We will practice this A LOT!  We will end the week with our 100th day celebration!  Can you believe it is already the 100th day of Kindergarten?  It is a fun day.    On Friday, come to school dressed like you are 100 years old!  In Science,  we will begin a lengthy discussion on rocks and how to group them.  For this week's sight words, a few of the students need a review on some of the words from the last set of sight words.  You will get an individual email going over what we are reviewing with your child.  Some of you will get the new set of sight words.  Others will review the previous set until they have mastered them.  We will test again on Friday.

1/5/20

I know you all are anxiously awaiting my weekly email so here it is!!  I hope you all had a wonderful break and are ready to get back to normal life.  My break was calm, restful and full of much needed family time.  I hope yours was also.  I am looking forward to seeing your child tomorrow!

This week will be learning about germs and how to avoid them.  We will continue to work and review on the s blends, sp, sw, st, sh,.  We will focus on word problems and using multiple strategies to solve them.  Our words for this week are brown and was.   I can’t remember if I sent home a new sight word list but look for it come home this week.  It doesn’t hurt to have two sets.  I will be testing the previous 3 sets this week.  Report Cards will come home on Friday.
